Historia y organización de las fuerzas armadas en México: 1917-1937

Abstract

“This book focuses on the post-revolutionary period and provides an overview of how the armed forces functioned and how they were structured. It describes the weapons (cavalry, infantry, artillery, engineers and aviation) and the services (health, justice and military quartermaster) that existed during that period. Other aspects treated here have to do with the peculiarities of the Mexican army: an excessive number of generals, unlimited licenses that facilitated the participation of many of these generals in political activities -with the consequent increase of the army's power-, numerous desertions, the use of irregular forces (the agrarists). It also analyzes the role of the armed forces in politics and the use of the army by the presidents of that time to control the regional power of some governors. In sum, it is possible to observe how the army was a fundamental piece in the political centralization of the country and the strengthening of presidentialism.”

"Este libro se centra en el periodo posrevolucionario y ofrece una visión general de cómo funcionaban y cómo estaban estructuradas las fuerzas armadas. Se describen las armas (caballería, infantería, artillería, ingenieros y aviación) y los servicios (sanidad, justicia e intendencia militar) que se tenían en ese periodo. Otros aspectos aquí tratados tienen que ver con las peculiaridades del ejército mexicano: un número excesivo de generales, licencias ilimitadas que facilitaban la participación de muchos de esos generales en actividades políticas -con el consecuente incremento del poder del ejército-, numerosas deserciones, la utilización de fuerzas irregulares (los agraristas). También se analiza el papel de las fuerzas armadas en la política y la utilización del ejército por parte de los presidentes de aquella época para controlar el poder regional de algunos gobernadores. En suma, es posible observar cómo el ejército fue una pieza fundamental para la centralización política del país y el afianzamiento del presidencialismo"
