Las trecenas del tonalpohualli y las veintenas del cempoallapohualli en el Códice Mexicanus

Abstract

Very few are the correlations in pictographic sources between the “count of the days/fates”, tonalpohualli and the count of the twenty day periods cempoallapohualli. Both calendars were closely related since the thirteen days of the first conjugated chronologically with the twenty days of the second, but the space-time frame defined by the beginning and the end of the periods of twenty days is not visually circumscribed in the tonalpohualli. A notable exception is to be found in the Codex Mexicanus, a pictorial miscellany which contains, among other things, two tonalpohualli or more precisely two parts of a single tonalpohualli. In this document, some pictures or alphabetic annotations indicate the specific day of the cempoallapohualli on which the principal feast might have been celebrated. This correlation allows us to deduce, as we will see, the beginning and the end of each twenty-day period

Escasas son las correlaciones que se establecen, en las fuentes pictográficas, entre el tonalpohualli, “la cuenta de los días/destinos” y el cempoallapohualli, “la cuenta de las veintenas”. Ambos calendarios estaban estrechamente relacionados ya que las trecenas del primero se conjugaban, cronológicamente, con las veintenas del segundo. Sin embargo, el marco espacio-temporal que el principio y el fin de las veintenas delimitan en la duración no está visualmente circunscrito en el tonalpohualli. Una excepción notable se encuentra en el Códice Mexicanus, miscelánea pictográfica que contiene, entre otras cosas, dos representaciones del tonalpohualli, o mejor dicho, las dos partes de una sola cuenta. En este documento unas imágenes y/o indicaciones alfabéticas señalan la veintena que correspondía a determinada trecena, en un día específico del tonalpohualli en el que podría haberse realizado la fiesta principal de las veintenas del cempoallapohualli. Esta correlación permite deducir, según lo estableceremos, el comienzo y fin de las veintenas referidas.
