he review analyzes Pablo Mijangos y González’s The Lawyer of the Church, a biographical and intellectual study of Bishop Clemente de Jesús Munguía (1810–1868), a key figure in the confrontation between Church and State during Mexico’s Liberal Reform. Drawing on extensive archival research and a comparative Atlantic framework, the book shows how Munguía sought to reconcile liberal republicanism with Catholicism, defending the idea of the Church as a “perfect society” with its own rights against civil power. The work follows his career as rector of the Morelia Seminary, bishop of Michoacán, and leading actor in debates over patronage, ecclesiastical property, and education. The review highlights the book’s originality in moving beyond binary views (Church vs. State, conservatives vs. liberals) to emphasize the fluidity of ideas, European intellectual influences, and the paradoxical nature of Munguía, who ultimately accepted the Church-State separation he had once fiercely opposed. La reseña examina The Lawyer of the Church de Pablo Mijangos y González, obra que ofrece una biografía intelectual y política del obispo Clemente de Jesús Munguía (1810-1868), figura central en la confrontación entre Iglesia y Estado durante la Reforma Liberal mexicana. Basado en un sólido trabajo de archivo y un enfoque comparativo dentro del mundo atlántico, el libro muestra cómo Munguía intentó articular un pensamiento original que conciliara republicanismo liberal y catolicismo, defendiendo la noción de la Iglesia como “sociedad perfecta” con derechos propios frente al poder civil. La obra rastrea su trayectoria como rector del Seminario de Morelia, obispo de Michoacán y protagonista en los debates sobre patronato, propiedad eclesiástica y educación.
