Reflexiones sobre el arte escultórico y el culto a Quetzalcóatl en el Coyoacán posclásico

Abstract

From the community of Coyoacán come two large-format sculptures that depict the deity Quetzalcoatl in his Feathered Serpent avocation. The two sculptures, carved in a high quality basalt, date from the Late Postclassic period and may be ascribed to the Tepanec culture. The first was recorded by captain Guillermo Dupaix; today, it is conserved at the Museo Nacional de Antropología. The second was acquired and portrayed by painter Édouard Pingret, and currently resides at the Smithsonian Institution of Washington. This article discusses the importance in the region of the deity Quetzal-coatl. Finally, the cultural biography of both objects is reconstructed

Del poblado de Coyoacán proceden dos esculturas de gran formato que representan al dios Quetzalcóatl en su aspecto de Serpiente Emplumada. Ambas tallas en basalto de gran calidad datan del periodo Posclásico tardío y pueden adscribirse a la cultura tepaneca. La primera fue registrada por el capitán Guillermo Dupaix; hoy forma parte de las colecciones del Museo Nacional de Antropología. La segunda fue dibujada y adquirida por el pintor Édouard Pingret; actualmente integra las colecciones de la Smithsonian Institution de Washington. En este artículo se discute la importancia del culto al dios Quetzalcóatl en la región. Finalmente, se reconstruye la biografía cultural de ambos objetos
