Abstract

Mauricio Swadesh presents an overview of Mesoamerica’s linguistic richness, identifying approximately eighty Indigenous languages belonging to different language families. The author analyzes their geographical distribution, structural similarities, and the importance of preserving them as cultural heritage. He also discusses the history of their study, possible common origins, and the methodological challenges of classification. Mauricio Swadesh presenta un panorama de la riqueza lingüística de Mesoamérica, donde identifica aproximadamente ochenta lenguas autóctonas pertenecientes a diferentes familias lingüísticas. El autor analiza su distribución geográfica, sus similitudes estructurales y la importancia de su preservación como patrimonio cultural. Además, discute la historia de su estudio, sus posibles orígenes comunes y los desafíos metodológicos para su clasificación.
