Tlaxilacalli y altepetl en el Acolhuacan central, siglos XIV-XVII

Abstract

Tlaxilacalli are one of the most important institutions in Mesoamerican history from the Postclassic until, at least, the mature colonial period. Nevertheless, despite their strong presence in documentary sources and their long trajectory across the specialized literature, recent historiography has tended to ignore them. Drawing from the extensive documentary record from Acolhua-can, this article shows the profound influence of tlaxilacalli in both Postclassic and colonial Mexican history, describing as well the relationship of this institution with the better-known altepetl. The article also suggests ways to harmonize rival theories of the tlaxilacalli: they were at once both local and imperial

Los tlaxilacalli constituyen una de las instituciones más importantes en la historia mesoamericana desde el Posclásico hasta, por lo menos, el siglo xvii. Sin embargo, a pesar de su marcada presencia en fuentes históricas y su larga trayectoria en la literatura especializada, la historiografía reciente tiende a ignorarlos. Fundándose en una extensa documentación acolhua, este artículo demuestra la profunda influencia de los tlaxilacalli en la historia posclásica y colonial, especificando su relación con el mejor conocido altepetl. El autor también sugiere maneras de armonizar dos teorías rivales sobre los tlaxilacalli: eran a la vez locales e imperiales
