Silabogramas nahuas en tiempos de la Conquista

Abstract

This article comprises four sections. In the first one I provide a structural description of the hieroglyphic Nahuatl writing system, which includes a repertoire of signs and writing resources, as well as rules for composition. In the second section, I address the presence of syllabograms in Mexica sculptures and in the earliest Colonial codices. The third section is dedicated to clarifying whether those early syllabograms could have come into use through direct influence from the alphabet or induced by it, either by the natives themselves or by Spaniards, or as part of a monastic institutional project for the purpose of producing picture-based catechisms. Lastly, the fourth section offers a plausible explanation for the creation of the Nahuatl acrophonic syllabary as the product of adapting some pre-existing Oto-Manguean writing system. Thus, I purport to ratify that the kind of writing system reflects the kind of language that it represents

Este artículo consta de cuatro secciones. En la primera de ellas proporcionó una descripción estructural del sistema de escritura náhuatl jeroglífico, el cual incluye repertorio de signos, recursos escriturarios y reglas de composición. En la segunda abordó el tema de la presencia de silabogramas en la escultura mexica y en los códices coloniales más tempranos. La tercera sección está destinada a aclarar si dichos silabogramas tempranos pudieron haber sido instrumentados por influencia directa o inducida del alfabeto, ya sea mediante su creación por indígenas o españoles, o como parte de un proyecto institucional monástico en la confección de catecismos pictográficos. Finalmente, la última sección ofrece una posible explicación para la creación del silabario acrofónico náhuatl, como producto de la adaptación de algún sistema de escritura otomangue preexistente. Con ello pretendo ratificar que el tipo de escritura es un reflejo del tipo de lengua que representa
