Abstract
This review examines Lisa Sousa’s The Woman Who Turned into a Jaguar and Other Narratives of Native Women in Archives of Colonial Mexico, a foundational work on Indigenous women’s lives in colonial Mexico from 1520 to 1750. Drawing on judicial records, wills, codices, doctrinal literature, and church archives, Sousa reconstructs the experiences of Nahua, Mixtec, Zapotec, and Mixe women. The book explores gender complementarity, domestic violence, sexuality, marriage, women's labor, and participation in rebellions. It offers a nuanced and complex portrait of female agency under colonial rule, revealing the persistence of Indigenous structures and the impact of patriarchal institutions imposed by the Spanish regime Esta reseña analiza el libro The Woman Who Turned into a Jaguar and Other Narratives of Native Women in Archives of Colonial Mexico, de Lisa Sousa, una obra fundamental sobre la vida de las mujeres indígenas en el México colonial entre 1520 y 1750.
