Viudas, tutoras y minería: la experiencia de Josefa Gertrudis Nieto Téllez-Girón en San Luis Potosí, segunda mitad del siglo XVIII

Abstract

"The aim of this work is to analyze the participation of women in mining in New Spain, focusing in the areas of ownership and management. To this end, a case study is conducted on Josefa Gertrudis Nieto in San Luis Potosí during the second half of the 18th century, using as primary source the legal proceedings of the creditor contest in which she was involved. Her experience is also compared with that of other female mine owners to establish connections between her individual trajectory and the mining, legal, and social context of the time. The central argument is that women were not merely limited to inheriting and transferring properties but also took on active roles as managers of mining businesses. This study highlights their role, as well as their functions as guardians and caretakers of their children, and the inherent difficulties they faced in engaging in activity characterized by uncertainty and considerable investment risks"

"El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la participación de las mujeres en la minería de Nueva España, con enfoque en los ámbitos de la propiedad y la gestión. Para ello, se realiza un estudio de caso sobre Josefa Gertrudis Nieto Téllez-Girón en San Luis Potosí durante la segunda mitad del siglo xviii, y se utiliza como fuente principal los autos del concurso de acreedores en el que estuvo involucrada. También se compara su experiencia con la de otras propietarias para establecer conexiones entre su trayectoria individual y el contexto minero, legal y social de la época. El argumento central es que las mujeres no se limitaron a heredar y transferir propiedades, sino que también asumieron roles activos como gestoras de negocios mineros. Este estudio destaca dicho papel, además de su función como tutoras y curadoras de sus hijos, y las inherentes dificultades a las que se enfrentaron al desempeñarse en una actividad caracterizada por la incertidumbre y los considerables riesgos en la inversión"
