Abstract

This review examines Angela Herren Rajagopalan’s Portraying the Aztec Past, a study of three pictorial codices representing the Mexica past: Boturini, Azcatitlan, and Aubin. The author explores how Indigenous scribes selected and depicted key events such as the migration from Aztlan, the foundation of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, the imperial period, and the Spanish Conquest. Through comparative and codicological analysis, she formulates hypotheses about Indigenous authorship, production stages, audiences, textual and visual influences, and the codices’ reinterpretation as tools of memory and Indigenous agency. While some interpretations are bold, the book stands out for its critical apparatus, visual clarity, and contributions to the study of Nahua pictorial historiography

Esta reseña analiza el libro Portraying the Aztec Past de Angela Herren Rajagopalan, dedicado a tres códices pictográficos que representan el pasado mexica: Boturini, Azcatitlan y Aubin. La autora examina cómo los tlacuiloque seleccionaron y representaron episodios clave como la migración desde Aztlan, la fundación de México-Tenochtitlan, el periodo imperial y la Conquista. A través de un enfoque comparativo y codicológico, propone hipótesis sobre autoría indígena, fases de producción, destinatarios, influencias textuales y visuales, así como la reinterpretación de los códices como vehículos de memoria y agencia indígena.
