El texto náhuatl del capítulo 20, libro II, del Códice Florentino: ensayo de paleografía y traducción

Abstract

As part of the collective research project “Paleography and Translation of the Florentine Codex,” directed since 2005 by José Rubén Romero Galván and Pilar Máynez, this work contains the first publication of my Spanish translation of the Nahuatl text of chapter 20, book II, of fray Bernardino de Sahagún"s Historia universal de las cosas de la Nueva España. This chapter describes the first ritual cycle of the twenty-day-count (cempohuallapohualli), known as Atl Cahualo (water is left) among the Mexica and as Cuahuitl Ehua (tree rises or wood departs) among other Nahua peoples. In the introduction text, I present the key methodological criteria for undertaking this new translation of the Sahaguntine text, drawing inspiration from the work of Giovanni G. Marchetti (1983) and highlighting the meticulous revision and comparison with the Códices matritenses, previous drafts of the Florentine Codex, in particular the Primeros memoriales, including a critical edition of the text corresponding to the Cuahuitl Ehua festival (Códice matritense de la Real Biblioteca, f. 250 r). I also comment on the relationships and differences between the Nahuatl text and the Spanish version of Sahagún, the rest of his work, and the preliminary notes and drawings in the Códices matritenses.

Como parte del proyecto de investigación colectivo “Paleografía y traducción del Códice Florentino”, se publica aquí por primera vez nuestra traducción al español del texto náhuatl del capítulo 20, libro II, de la Historia universal de las cosas de la Nueva España de fray Bernardino de Sahagún, el cualtrata de la primera fiesta de la cuenta de las veintenas (Cem-pohuallapohualli), llamada entre los mexicas Atl Cahualo, “el agua es dejada”, y entre otros pueblos nahuas Cuahuitl Ehua, “el árbol se levanta” o “el madero se va”. En un texto introductorio, presento los criterios metodológicos más importantes para la realización de esta nueva edición del texto sahaguntino, inspirándome en el trabajo de Giovanni Marchetti (1983) y destacando la revisión minuciosa y el cotejo con los Códices Matritenses, los borradores previos al Códice Florentino, en particular los Primeros memoriales, de los cuales se presentará también una edición crítica del texto correspondiente a la fiesta de Cuahuitl Ehua (Códice Matritense de la Real Biblioteca, f. 250r). En la introducción, expresaré también algu-nos comentarios enfocados en las relaciones y las diferencias entre el texto náhuatl y la versión castellana de Sahagún, el resto de su obra y los apuntes preliminares y dibujos de los Códices Matritenses
