Abstract

This review analyzes Jonathan Truitt’s Nahuas and Catholicism (1523–1700), a study of Indigenous religiosity in Mexico City during the early colonial period. Drawing on Nahuatl-language sources such as wills, annals, chronicles, and ecclesiastical records, the author explores how Nahua communities appropriated and reconfigured Catholic practices through writing, music, theater, and religious brotherhoods. The book highlights the active roles of women, artisans, and Indigenous intermediaries in shaping religious life. While the study offers an original perspective, the review notes the absence of engagement with Spanish-language historiography and the omission of key topics such as epidemics, ecclesiastical legislation, and the role of the secular clergy

Esta reseña examina el libro Nahuas and Catholicism (1523–1700) de Jonathan Truitt, un estudio sobre la religiosidad indígena en la Ciudad de México durante el periodo virreinal temprano. Basado en fuentes en náhuatl como testamentos, anales, crónicas y registros eclesiásticos, el autor analiza cómo las comunidades nahuas adaptaron e integraron prácticas católicas mediante la apropiación de herramientas como la escritura, la música, el teatro y las cofradías. Se destaca el papel central de las mujeres, los artesanos y los intermediarios indígenas en la configuración del culto.
