Abstract

This review examines Deciphering Aztec Hieroglyphs by Gordon Whittaker, a systematic guide to the Nahuatl writing system from the perspective of comparative grammatology. The book argues that Nahuatl writing is glottographic rather than merely pictographic or iconographic, combining logographic and syllabic elements. Although designed as a learning manual, its lack of a complete sign list and limited bibliography affect its pedagogical utility. The author contrasts his approach with that of the Maya Group, outlining key methodological agreements and disagreements. The book offers a significant contribution to the study of Nahuatl script, though it provokes debate regarding its analytical framework and core assumptions

Esta reseña analiza el libro Deciphering Aztec Hieroglyphs de Gordon Whittaker, una guía sistemática sobre el sistema de escritura náhuatl desde la perspectiva de la gramatología comparada. La obra propone que esta escritura es glotográfica y no meramente pictográfica o iconográfica, y combina elementos logográficos y silábicos.
