Nueva España y el Pacífico Hispánico: un homenaje a Carmen Yuste

Abstract

New Spain and the Hispanic Pacific brings together works resulting from the academic career of Carmen Yuste López, who has dedicated more than 40 years to research on trade, transpacific connections, and the Manila Galleon, as well as to teaching about 18th-century New Spain. The book reflects on topics related to her main lines of research, focusing on three major issues: the trade and networks established between the Philippines and New Spain; the territorial incursions and commercial negotiations that took place in the transpacific region, involving territories directly facing that ocean; and the attempts at and scope of reforms in the colonial sphere, from the Iberian Peninsula to New Spain and the Philippines. With this book, we intend to pay a well-deserved tribute to Carmen Yuste's long academic career, during which she has opened new lines and perspectives of research, and to a body of work distinguished by its originality and pioneering nature in the global and social history of trade.

Nueva España y el Pacífico hispánico reúne trabajos que ha propiciado la figura académica de Carmen Yuste López, quien ha dedicado más de 40 años a la investigación relativa al comercio, las conexiones transpacíficas y el Galeón de Manila, así como a la docencia sobre el siglo XVIII novohispano. En la obra se reflexiona acerca de temas relacionados con sus principales líneas de trabajo, en torno a tres grandes cuestiones: el comercio y las redes que se establecieron entre Filipinas y Nueva España; las incursiones territoriales y las negociaciones comerciales que se desarrollaron en el ámbito transpacífico, en las que se involucraron los territorios directamente volcados a ese océano; y los intentos y los alcances de las reformas en el ámbito colonial, desde la península ibérica, a Nueva España y Filipinas. Con el libro pretendemos rendir un merecido homenaje a una larga carrera académica de Carmen Yuste, quien, a través de los años, ha abierto nuevas líneas y perspectivas de investigación, y a una obra que se ha distinguido por su originalidad y su carácter pionero en la historia global y la historia social del comercio.
