El bautizo de tres tupinambás en París: mediación, aculturación y alianza franco-tupí, siglo XVII

Abstract

Beginning with the baptism of three tupinambás in Paris in 1613, which aroused great interest, both in the court and in the French collective imagination, this text revisits the long tradition of trips by Tupi Indians to French lands to account for a specific type of interaction, mediation and acculturation on the American borders within the framework of a long-standing political, military and commercial alliance. The political agency of the “Tupinambás ambassadors” is analyzed through the results of their mediation, translation, change and adaptation practices. By incorporating the Catholic discursive and symbolic order, whilst appropriating certain practices and rejecting others, the Tupinambás transcended the logic of the imposition of a Colonial model by negotiating and endorsing their political-military alliance with the French. A partir del bautizo de tres tupinambás en París, en 1613, que despertó gran interés tanto en la Corte como en el imaginario colectivo francés, este texto recupera la larga tradición de viajes de indios tupís a tierras francesas para dar cuenta de un tipo específico de interacción, mediación y aculturación en las fronteras americanas en el marco de una alianza político, militar y comercial de larga data. Se analiza la agencia política de los “embajadores tupinambás” como resultado sus prácticas de mediación, traducción, cambio y adaptación. Al incorporar el orden discursivo y simbólico católico, apropiarse de ciertas prácticas y rechazar otras, los tupinambás trascendieron la lógica de la imposición de un modelo colonial, negociaron y refrendaron su alianza política-militar con los franceses. La posibilidad de construir mundos mutuamente comprensibles estuvo acompañada de diversos tipos de intercambio entre los cuales, las mujeres y el matrimonio jugaron un papel central
