Entre el servicio y el beneficio: desempeño y prácticas habituales entre los capitanes protectores de la Sierra Gorda novohispana, 1590-1680,

Abstract

The Hispanic expansion into the northern territories of America caused a long and hostile confrontation with the native societies that lived there. These conflicts, known as the Chichimeca War, ceased mostly in the 1590s. To achieve and maintain the pacification of these areas, the role of the “capitanes protectores” was decisive. They were responsible for the Indians remaining settled, receiving justice and supplies for their maintenance while assimilating civil and Christian forms. This article aims to show the origin of this duty in the north of New Spain in general, and the Sierra Gorda in particular, until 1680, highlighting the continuous adjustments this job went through. This way, it will be clear that a growing gap took place, between the duties of this office and their performances

La expansión hispana hacia los territorios septentrionales de América causó una larga y hostil confrontación con las sociedades nativas que ahí habitaban. Estos conflictos, conocidos como guerra Chichimeca, cesaron mayormente en la década de 1590. Para alcanzar y mantener la pacificación de estas zonas, fue decisivo el papel de los capitanes protectores, responsables de que los indios permanecieran asentados, recibiendo justicia y suministros para su manutención, mientras asimilaban las formas civiles y cristianas. Este artículo pretende mostrar, de manera general, el origen de este cargo en el norte de Nueva España y en particular en la zona de la Sierra Gorda, hasta 1680, destacando los continuos ajustes por los que atravesó, hasta un momento en que su desempeño cayó en cierta decadencia. Mediante ello, quedará manifiesta una creciente brecha entre las obligaciones propias del oficio y su práctica
