Abstract

The document analyzes the evolution of fray Bernardino de Sahagún's work "General History of the Things of New Spain," emphasizing its linguistic approach focused on the Nahuatl language rather than writing. It describes three stages in the development of the work, from the initial use of paintings as mnemonic aids to the integration of Nahuatl text with Spanish translation and the creation of illustrations in the Florentine Codex. The study highlights the importance of the Nahuatl text as a cultural and linguistic foundation and how the paintings accompany and complement this text to preserve and convey knowledge of Aztec civilization

El documento analiza la evolución de la obra "Historia General de las Cosas de Nueva España" de fray Bernardino de Sahagún, destacando su acercamiento lingüístico centrado en la lengua náhuatl más que en la escritura. Se describen tres etapas en el desarrollo de la obra, desde el uso inicial de pinturas como soporte mnemotécnico hasta la integración del texto náhuatl con traducción al castellano y la elaboración de las ilustraciones en el Códice Florentino. El estudio resalta la importancia del texto náhuatl como base cultural y lingüística, y cómo las pinturas acompañan y complementan dicho texto para preservar y transmitir conocimientos de la civilización azteca
