Abstract

The article analyzes the succession conflict following the death of Moctezuma Ilhuicamina, the fifth tlatoani of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, exploring the Mexica semi-hereditary system and its flexible primogeniture rule. It highlights the possible female succession through the figure of Atotoztli, showing how the governance system could prioritize women over other male relatives in specific contexts. Furthermore, it reflects on the historicity of the Aztec dynastic history, suggesting it may have been structured through symbolic models rather than rigorous historicity. The study combines indigenous and colonial sources to offer a critical and novel view of governance and succession complexities in the Mexica altepetl

El artículo analiza el conflicto de sucesión tras la muerte de Moctezuma Ilhuicamina, quinto tlatoani de México-Tenochtitlan, explorando el sistema semi-hereditario de los mexicas y su regla de primogenitura flexible. Destaca la posible sucesión femenina mediante la figura de Atotoztli, mostrando cómo el sistema de gobierno podía privilegiar a mujeres sobre otros parientes masculinos en contextos específicos. Además, se reflexiona sobre la historicidad de la historia dinástica azteca, planteando que pudo estar estructurada mediante modelos simbólicos y no necesariamente con historicidad rigurosa.
