A Stylistic Analysis of the Codex Cozcatzin: Its Implications for the Study of Post Conquest Aztec Manuscripts

Abstract

This article provides a detailed stylistic analysis of the Codex Cozcatzin, a 16th-century Mexican colonial manuscript. By examining line, color, form, and spatial representation techniques, different artists and their stylistic evolution are identified, revealing a native artistic tradition in transition after the Spanish conquest. The coexistence of indigenous and European elements is highlighted, as well as the codex’s function as a legal document for land claims

El artículo presenta un análisis detallado del estilo pictórico del Codex Cozcatzin, un manuscrito colonial mexicano del siglo XVI. A través del estudio de las técnicas de línea, color, forma y representación espacial, se identifican diferentes artistas y su evolución estilística, evidenciando una tradición artística nativa en transición tras la conquista española. Se destaca la coexistencia de elementos indígenas y europeos, así como la función del códice como documento legal para reivindicaciones territoriales
