Levels of Acculturation in Northeastern New Spain: San Esteban Testaments of the Seventeenth and Eighteeth Centuries

Abstract

This article examines the processes of acculturation in the indigenous community of San Esteban, located in northeastern New Spain, during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Through the analysis of wills written in Nahuatl, it reveals how the indigenous population gradually incorporated elements of the Hispanic world, reflecting a bilingual and bicultural coexistence. The study explores linguistic, social, and cultural changes that demonstrate a balance between the persistence of indigenous traditions and the adoption of Spanish practices, offering a unique perspective on indigenous adaptation within the colonial context

Este artículo examina los procesos de aculturación en la comunidad indígena de San Esteban, ubicada en el noreste de Nueva España, durante los siglos XVII y XVIII. A través del análisis de testamentos escritos en náhuatl, se revela cómo la población indígena fue incorporando gradualmente elementos del mundo hispano, reflejando una coexistencia bilingüe y bicultural.
