La confesión auricular. Dos textos

Abstract

This article presents and translates two texts from the Florentine Codex concerning Tlazoltéotl and the Nahua rite of auricular confession. The first text describes the goddess and the practice of neyolmelahualiztli (“straightening the heart”), including rituals, prayers, penances, and the role of the tonalpouhqui. The second is a rhetorical piece: the prayer addressed by the tonalpouhqui to Tezcatlipoca during the sinner’s confession. The author examines the contradictions between indigenous accounts and colonial chroniclers’ interpretations, who viewed Tlazoltéotl as the embodiment of filth and sin, contrasting with the pre-Hispanic understanding in which impurity was linked to fertility and regeneration. The study contributes to the understanding of the religious and social meaning of sexual sin in the Nahua world and the impact of Thomist theology on its colonial reinterpretation

Este artículo presenta y traduce dos textos del Códice florentino relacionados con Tlazoltéotl y el rito de la confesión auricular entre los nahuas. El primero describe a la diosa y la práctica de la neyolmelahualiztli (“enderezar el corazón”), con sus rituales, oraciones, penitencias y el papel del tonalpouhqui. El segundo consiste en una pieza retórica: la oración que el tonalpouhqui dirigía a Tezcatlipoca durante la confesión del penitente. La autora analiza las contradicciones entre los relatos indígenas y las interpretaciones de los cronistas, quienes veían en Tlazoltéotl la encarnación de lo “sucio” y lo pecaminoso, a diferencia de la compleja visión prehispánica donde lo inmundo estaba relacionado con fertilidad y regeneración. El estudio aporta elementos para comprender el significado religioso y social del pecado sexual en el mundo nahua y la influencia del discurso teológico tomista en su reinterpretación colonial
