El náhuatl de la Crónica mexicana

Abstract

The Crónica mexicana was supposedly written by Fernando Alvarado Tezozómoc in Spanish, around 1598. It tells the story of the Mexica from their departure from Aztlan until the arrival of the Spaniards. The text of the Crónica mexicana comprises a total of 163315 words, of which 7013 are in Nahuatl and 1892 are different words. These almost 2000 words will be discussed here, and we will show that the Crónica mexicana is the work of a nahuatlato that had a peculiar sensitivity to the sounds of languages, remarkable both in Spanish and in Nahuatl, and a very fine knowledge of his native tongue, which allowed him to adopt special graphics solutions that did not exist at the time

La Crónica mexicana relata la historia de los mexica desde su salida de Aztlan hasta la llegada de los españoles. El texto, escrito en español supuestamente por Hernando de Alvarado Tezozómoc hacía 1598, consta de 163 315 palabras, de las cuales 7 013 están en náhuatl (1 892 palabras diferentes). Son esas casi 2 000 palabras las que se presentan para mostrar que la Crónica mexicana es obra de un nahuatlato que tenía una sensibilidad peculiar hacia los sonidos de las lenguas, notable tanto en español como en náhuatl, así como un conocimiento fino de su lengua materna, lo que le permitió adoptar soluciones gráficas particulares que no existían en su época
