Abstract

"This article examines the tlacotli based on the analysis of documentary sources of the 16th and 17th centuries. Their profile is presented: the ways in which indigenous people acquired that condition; their rights and obligations; the place they occupied in Aztec society and the ways to regain freedom. Likewise, several terms related to tlacotli are reviewed to reveal the complexity of the category, but also the existence of forms of subjection other than the slavery known in the Old World"

"En este artículo se examina al tlacotli con base en el análisis de fuentes documentales de los siglos xvi y xvii. Se expone su perfil: las formas en las que los indígenas adquirían esa con-dición; sus derechos y obligaciones; el lugar que ocupaba en la sociedad mexica; y las mane-ras de recuperar su libertad. Asimismo, se revisan varios términos relacionados con el tla-cotli que revelan la complejidad de esa categoría, pero también la existencia de formas de sujeción diferentes a la esclavitud conocida en el Viejo Mundo"
