Abstract

This review examines the first English translation of Historia de la nación chichimeca, a historical work by the Indigenous colonial chronicler Fernando de Alva Ixtlilxóchitl. Based on the original manuscript preserved in the Codex Chimalpahin, this edition offers a more faithful version of the text, distinct from previous Spanish-language editions. The review discusses the structure, content, philological findings, and historiographical context of the work, as well as the renewed scholarly interest it has generated in the United States. The translators' efforts in annotation and contextualization are praised, while the review calls for increased dialogue between Anglo and Spanish-language scholarship on Alva Ixtlilxóchitl

Esta reseña analiza la primera traducción al inglés de la Historia de la nación chichimeca, obra histórica de Fernando de Alva Ixtlilxóchitl, cronista indígena novohispano. Basada en el manuscrito original contenido en el Códice Chimalpahin, esta edición permite acceder a una versión más fidedigna del texto, distinta de las ediciones previas. La reseña examina la estructura, contenido, hallazgos filológicos y contexto historiográfico de la obra, así como el renovado interés académico que ha despertado en Estados Unidos. Se valora el trabajo de traducción, anotación y contextualización de los editores, y se subraya la necesidad de mayor diálogo entre la historiografía anglosajona y la producida en español sobre Alva Ixtlilxóchitl
