Un nuevo texto náhuatl de la danza de Los Santiagos: tras los pasos de Fernando Horcasitas en el Acolhuacan septentrional y el valle de Teotihuacán

Abstract

"This article presents a script in Nahuatl and a new translation of a Moors and Christians dance from the Texcoco region. It is the same script with some minor variations that Fernando Horcasitas had translated and published in 1975 without the original Nahuatl text. The text presented here is annotated with commentaries on the two versions in Nahuatl and Horcasitas’s previous translation. To put the script into proper context, the use and loss of Nahuatl and its presence in devotional dances in the region and in the adjacent Valley of Teotihuacan in the twentieth century are first examined. A reconstruction of the history of these two known versions of this script is also proposed and some of the possible reasons for the transformations, transmission, and loss of this dance are suggested. In the conclusions, the relationship between the Nahuatl script and Spanish-language texts of Moors and Christians dances in the two regions is discussed; it is proposed that in the past, before Spanish definitively replaced Nahuatl in the mid-twentieth century, that similar scripts of this dance were translated or adapted and circulated in the two languages"

"En este artículo se presentan un libreto en náhuatl y una nueva traducción al español de una danza de moros y cristianos proveniente de la región texcocana. Se trata del mismo libreto, con algunas variaciones menores, que Fernando Horcasitas había traducido y publicado en 1975 sin el texto náhuatl original. El texto aquí presentado es anotado con comentarios a las dos versiones en náhuatl y la traducción previa de Horcasitas. Para contextualizar el libreto, se examinan primero el uso y la pérdida del náhuatl en la región y el adyacente valle de Teotihuacán en el siglo XX, así como su presencia en las danzas devocionales de estas dos regiones. Se proponen, también, una reconstrucción de la historia de las dos versiones conocidas del libreto y algunas posibles explicaciones de las transformaciones, transmisión y pérdida de esta danza. En las conclusiones se señala la relación del libreto en náhuatl con textos en español de danzas de moros y cristianos en las dos regiones. Se propone que, en el pasado, antes de que el castellano reemplazara definitivamente al náhuatl hacia mediados del siglo XX, libretos similares de esta danza se traducían o se adaptaban, circulándose entre los dos idiomas"
