Abstract

This review analyzes the work of David Eduardo Tavárez, "Rethinking Zapotec Time," focusing on the relationship between cosmology, ritual, and resistance in Zapotec culture during the colonial era. Through a detailed examination of Zapotec calendars and their interactions with Christianity, complex dynamics of time and space that were fundamental to the daily and spiritual life of the Zapotecs are revealed. The work highlights the use of historical and contemporary sources, and how colonial repression did not extinguish cultural practices but rather transformed and adapted indigenous worldviews. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of an interdisciplinary approach that unites history, anthropology, and linguistics for a deeper understanding of this rich cultural heritage
