Abstract

The chapter "Punishment: General Inspection Against the Rebels of Mexico" examines the repercussions of the 1624 revolt in Mexico City and the role of the Inquisition in the trial of those involved. It analyzes the arrival of the inspectors Carrillo and Alderete, who, concerned about costs and the selection of guilty parties, implemented a judicial process marked by flaws such as the fabrication of testimony and the coercion of the accused. The chapter documents the strategies used by the agents of the Marquis of Gelves to undermine his opponents, as well as the series of anonymous testimonies that, despite their lack of evidence, were employed to sway public opinion against the rebels. Through this general inspection, the chapter illustrates the complex interplay between viceregal politics, justice, and the manipulation of evidence during a complicated period in the history of New Spain.

El capítulo "Castigar. Visita general contra los rebeldes de México" examina las repercusiones de la revuelta de 1624 en la Ciudad de México y el papel de la inquisición en el juicio de los implicados. Analiza la llegada del visitador Carrillo y Alderete, quienes, preocupados por los costos y la selección de culpables, implementaron un proceso judicial que estuvo marcado por vicios como la fabricación de testimonios y la presión sobre los acusados. Se documentan las estrategias utilizadas por los agentes del marqués de Gelves para socavar a sus oponentes, así como la serie de testimonios anónimos que, a pesar de su falta de evidencia, fueron empleados para movilizar la opinión pública contra los rebeldes.
