Abstract

This chapter analyzes the emergence and consolidation of the hacienda system during the colonial period in Mexico, highlighting the transition from an indigenous economy to one dominated by the Spanish economy in the 16th century. It describes how the growing demand for agricultural and livestock products spurred land expansion and the creation of productive units known as haciendas. Through an examination of the structural and secondary characteristics of these haciendas, different types are identified, such as sugar and livestock haciendas, and their evolution over time is considered, marked by local variations and the influence of developed infrastructure. The chapter also mentions intermediate productive units, such as ranchos, and the crucial role of infrastructure and capital in the formation and development of these haciendas.

El capítulo analiza el surgimiento y consolidación de la hacienda durante la época colonial en México, destacando la transición de una economía indígena hacia una dominada por la economía española en el siglo XVI. Se describe cómo la creciente demanda de productos agrícolas y ganaderos incentivó la expansión de tierras y la creación de unidades productivas conocidas como haciendas. A través de un examen de las características estructurales y secundarias de estas haciendas, se identifican diferentes tipos, como las haciendas azucareras y ganaderas, y se considera su evolución a lo largo del tiempo, marcada por variaciones locales y la influencia de las infraestructuras desarrolladas. El capítulo también menciona unidades productivas intermedias, como los ranchos, y el papel crucial de la infraestructura y el capital en la formación y desarrollo de estas haciendas
