Abstract

This chapter explores the development and application of the omni-insular doctrine in the Mediterranean islands from the conquest of the Balearic Islands in 1114 to the 15th century. It analyzes the relationship between the papacy and the islands in terms of policies of dominion and supreme authority. The research highlights the role of Pope Paschal II in the expedition to the Balearic Islands, as well as the actions of James I the Conqueror and his influence in the region. Furthermore, it examines the supremacy of the papacy over various islands, including Cyprus and Rhodes, and papal grants of territories to nobles and institutions. This study underscores the interplay between political and religious power in the context of Mediterranean territorial expansion during the Middle Ages.

El capítulo explora el desarrollo y la aplicación de la doctrina omni-insular en las islas mediterráneas desde la conquista de las Baleares en 1114 hasta el siglo XV. Se analiza la relación entre el papado y las islas en términos de políticas de dominio y suprema autoridad. La investigación destaca la figura de papa Pascual II en la expedición a las Baleares, así como las acciones de Don Jaime el Conquistador y su influencia en la región. Además, se examina la supremacía del papado sobre diversas islas, incluyendo Chipre y Rodas, y las concesiones papales de territorios a nobles e instituciones.
