El bisonte de América: historia, polémica y leyenda

Abstract

The species Bison-bison appeared in North America more than five thousand years ago. During its heyday, hundreds of bison herds lived in a large area that comprised the territories of what nowadays is known as Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The discovery of the New World had as one of its main events the encounter of the Europeans with the bison, which from that moment on were related to the acquisition of knowledge about North America and to the appropriation and the conquest of it. This book presents a version of those modern episodes that occurred between the sixteenth and the nineteenth centuries. Furthermore, it deals with some polemical subjects concerning bison and which, from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, have been developed in various chronicles, scientific studies, myths, and legends. In this volume, the reader will also find the similarities and differences between bison, bulls, and common cows, besides several points which are important in order to know the symbolic and imaginary world of this species within the cultural universe of humans, a universe that, from the Antiquity to the present has sacralized and/or demonized the bull—and its kin—as well as its particular attributes.

La especie Bison-bison aparece en América del Norte desde hace más de cinco mil años y en esta parte del continente asentó sus reales. En una de sus épocas de mayor apogeo, incontables manadas ocupaban una extensa área que, entre norte y sur, comprendía buena parte de Canadá, Estados Unidos y México. El descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo por los europeos tuvo con los bisontes una de sus importantes primicias y, no en vano, estuvieron en estrecha relación con la conquista, el conocimiento y la apropiación del Septentrión americano. Este libro narra una versión de esos episodios modernos. Éstos corren entre los siglos XVI y XIX y dan cuenta, a la postre, de su fatal exterminio. Asimismo se tratan algunos temas polémicos que, desde los siglos XVI al XX, se han forjado en torno a los bisontes en distintas crónicas, estudios científicos, mitos y leyendas. También encontrará el lector las semejanzas y diferencias entre los bisontes y los toros y las vacas comunes, así como varios incisos más que son igualmente importantes para calar el interesante mundo simbólico e imaginario que estas especies comparten en el universo cultural de los humanos: un universo que, desde la antigüedad hasta nuestros días, ha sacralizado y/o demonizado al toro –incluidos sus parientes cercanos– y sus peculiares atributos.
