Instruir, confortar y cuidar: enfermeras visitadoras y de hospitales en México, 1920-1950

Abstract

The consolidation and expansion of the public health programs in Mexico during the course of the first half of the twentieth century was possible due to the work of numerous women in the different branches of nursing: as visiting nurses, hospital nurses and nurse assistants. The following pages will examine the importance that the training of visiting nurses acquired during the 1920s and 1930s for the Department of Public Health and the Rockefeller Foundation; the work that they carried out in favour of maternal and child health, as well as their participation during the smallpox vaccination campaigns in both urban and rural settings from the 1920s to the 1940s. Also, the pre-eminence that the modernization and construction of hospitals had as of the 1940s will be addressed, with the purpose to underline that the enlargement of the hospital system, alongside the increasing specialization of nursing, did not alter the perceptions and appreciations regarding their work in the realm of the state-led public health campaigns

La consolidación de las instituciones y la ampliación de los programas de salud pública durante el transcurso de la primera mitad del siglo pasado, fueron procesos en los que participaron numerosas mujeres en alguna de las diferentes vertientes en las que se configuró la enfermería: visitadoras o sanitarias, de hospitales y como ayudantes. En las siguientes páginas, se prestará atención a la importancia que revistió la formación de enfermeras visitadoras por parte del Departamento de Salubridad Pública y de la Fundación Rockefeller entre 1920 y 1930, así como a las diversas labores que desempeñaron en los programas de salud materno-infantil y en las campañas de vacunación contra la viruela entre 1920 y 1940. Asimismo, se estudiará la importancia que revistió la construcción y modernización de hospitales generales y especializados a partir de la década de 1940, y se destacará que la modernización y ampliación del ámbito hospitalario y la creciente especialización de la enfermería, no desembocó en un cambio referente a las percepciones y valoraciones de las conductas y saberes de esas mujeres en el ámbito de la salud pública institucional
