La élite luisianesa: actividades y vínculos en la construcción de la posición social (1731-1744)

Abstract

This thesis examines the configuration of the elite in French Louisiana, specifically in New Orleans, between 1731 and 1744, a crucial period marked by the retrocession of the territory to the direct authority of the French Crown after the relinquishment by the Company of the West Indies. It analyzes the local and metropolitan elements that intervened in the construction of this elite's social position, considering belonging, heritage, authority, prestige, and connections as differentiating factors. The research addresses how the administrative change in 1731, and the consequent implementation of new policies by figures such as the commissaire-ordonnateur Edmé Gatien de Salmon, impacted the social hierarchy, allowing for the consolidation of the pre-existing elite and the rise of new actors through military and bureaucratic roles and land ownership. The study explores social formation dynamics, including marital alliances, clientelistic relationships, and the materiality of daily life, to understand the "autopoietic" nature of the Louisianan elite and its capacity to adapt and reproduce in a colonial frontier context

Esta tesis examina la configuración de la élite en la Luisiana francesa, específicamente en Nueva Orleans, entre 1731 y 1744, un período crucial marcado por la retrocesión del territorio a la autoridad directa de la Corona francesa tras la renuncia de la Compañía de Indias Occidentales. Se analizan los elementos locales y metropolitanos que intervinieron en la construcción de la posición social de esta élite, considerando la pertenencia, el patrimonio, la autoridad, el prestigio y los vínculos como factores de diferenciación. La investigación aborda cómo el cambio administrativo en 1731, y la consecuente implementación de nuevas políticas por figuras como el commissaire-ordonnateur Edmé Gatien de Salmon, impactaron en la jerarquía social, permitiendo la consolidación de la élite preexistente y el ascenso de nuevos actores a través de roles militares, burocráticos y la posesión de tierras. Se exploran las dinámicas de formación social, incluyendo los enlaces matrimoniales, las relaciones clientelares y la materialidad de la vida cotidiana, para comprender la naturaleza "autopoética" de la élite luisianesa y su capacidad para adaptarse y reproducirse en un contexto colonial de frontera
