Migrantes, solares y justicias en la ciudad de México: Yopico a finales del siglo XVI

Abstract

This paper examines the conflicts over urban landholdings in the Indigenous Barrios(neighborhoods) of Mexico City at the end of the 16th century that arose due to the pressure resulting from local and transatlantic immigration. The study of a lawsuit between Spanish settlers and indigenous residents of Yopico, abarrio of Moyotlan in the urban subsection of San Juan Tenochtitlan, presents the judicial dynamics between different groups in Mexico City in the years immediately before the establishment of the General Court of Indians. It highlights the weight of the interests of local actors and stakeholders upon judicial decisions and regulations that were also shaped by the interests and orientations of the different judges, which ranged from the indigenous authorities of San Juan Tenochtitlan to the commissioned judges sent by the viceroy of New Spain

"El presente trabajo se aproxima a los conflictos por predios urbanos en los barrios indios de la ciudad de México a finales del siglo XVI, en el contexto de la presión derivada por la inmigración local y transatlántica. Mediante el estudio de un pleito entre españoles avecindados y naturales de Yopico, barrio de Moyotlan en la parcialidad de San Juan Tenochtitlan, se presentan las dinámicas judiciales que entreveraban distintos foros de la ciudad de México en los años inmediatos anteriores a la constitución del Juzgado general de indios. Se pone de relieve el peso de los intereses de los actores y contrapartes locales en las acciones de justicia, que estaban en la base de la generación normativa, y que se articulaban con los intereses y orientaciones de los diversos jueces, desde las autoridades indígenas de San Juan Tenochtitlan, hasta el juez comisionado enviado por el virrey de Nueva España"
