Los héroes de Thomas Carlyle

Abstract

The recent reading of Thomas Carlyle's On Heroes Raised some questions in me that I seek to answer in this text. Is it a literary work on a historical theme, a History or a philosophy of history? A bird's-eye view leads me to look with particular interest at some of the much that perhaps the most widespread work of the Scottish author has generated and to do so from three angles: that of his most visible presence as the product of a writer; that of his notorious or discreet appearance in books on the History of History and, finally, from what I notice in his lines that brings me closer to his idea of history as an event and of History as a narration. First, I present some arguments about the transcendence of the author and his work in the territories of literature; then, I show the assessment made of him and his contributions by those who deal with the history of the writing of History, and, finally, the selection of certain registers leads me to highlight the sense of transcendence of the historical that I was able to observe On Heroes

La lectura reciente de Los héroes, de Thomas Carlyle suscitó en mí algunas preguntas que busco responder en este texto. ¿Se trata de una obra literaria de tema histórico, de una Historia o de una filosofía de la historia? Un recorrido a vuelo de pájaro me lleva a mirar con particular interés algo de lo mucho que ha generado la obra quizá más difundida del autor escocés y hacerlo desde tres ángulos: el de su presencia más visible como producto de un escritor; el de su aparición notoria o discreta en libros de Historia de la Historia y, finalmente, desde su idea de la historia como acontecer y de la Historia como narración. En primer término, presento algunos argumentos acerca de la trascendencia del autor y su obra en los territorios de la literatura; después, muestro la valoración que hacen de él y de sus aportaciones quienes se ocupan de la historia de la escritura de la Historia, y, por último, la selección de ciertos registros me lleva a destacar el sentido de trascendencia de lo histórico que pude observar en Los héroes
