| dc.description.abstract | This article presents some reflections on the possible lived experience of an embodied human dignity, different from the human dignity conceived in enlightened political and philosophical discourses. The article suggests the existence of a feminine self-consciousness, typical of many enslaved women in the Spanish-American colonies who felt and knew they possessed a split body (part commodity, but part dignified person). It would have been the possession of this self-awareness that moved many of them to go to litigate in the courts of justice of the Hispanic Monarchy to obtain their freedom. The argumentation of this hypothesis is developed from the microhistorical analysis of certain clues from the reading of two judicial processes from New Orleans between 1794-1795. Both documents show the agency of enslaved women identified as black, who undertook the defense of their right to take care of themselves and defend their dignity, and who tried to gain access to their freedom |
