Abstract

This review analyzes Adrian Masters' book "We, the King. Creating Royal Legislation in the Sixteenth-Century Spanish New World," which re-examines the creation of royal legislation for American colonies in the 16th century. The author argues that the legislative process, far from being an absolutist imposition, was collective and bottom-up, involving a diversity of human and non-human actors through a system of vassal petitions. The study also explores how colonial ethno-social identification categories (indio, mestizo, mulato) were similarly created and diffused, demonstrating the complexity and erratic nature of colonial governance and re-evaluating the role of American subjects in shaping royal power
