Abstract

Speech by Miguel León-Portilla upon receiving the Doctor Honoris Causa from the Autonomous University of Colima in 1994. In his address, León-Portilla expresses gratitude for the honor and dedicates his speech to highlighting Colima's rich pre-Hispanic cultural legacy. He describes the prodigious pottery dating back over two thousand two hundred years, representing daily life, exuberant nature (flora and fauna), ceremonies, and the life-death duality of ancient Colimans. He discusses Teotihuacan's influence, Postclassic period constructions like El Chanal, and the abundant Nahuatl toponymy in the region. He emphasizes the persistence of the Nahuatl language in Colima until the 20th century and its rich literary tradition. Finally, he presents and translates a 16th-century Nahuatl letter from Tecomán, Colima, as the oldest testimony in this language from the region. En su alocución, León-Portilla agradece el honor y dedica su intervención a destacar el rico legado cultural prehispánico de Colima. Describe la portentosa alfarería que data de más de dos mil doscientos años, representando la vida cotidiana, la exuberante naturaleza (flora y fauna), ceremonias y la dualidad vida-muerte de los antiguos colimenses.
