Abstract

This essay by Miguel León-Portilla analyzes philological, linguistic, and cultural considerations of Nahuatl, focusing on the polysemy of the term "ixtli" (face, eye, cane knot) and its relationship with "yollotl" (heart, vitality, knowledge), advocating for the "face, heart" difrasismo. Este ensayo de Miguel León-Portilla analiza consideraciones filológicas, lingüísticas y culturales del náhuatl, centrándose en la polisemia del término "ixtli" (rostro, ojo, ñudo de caña) y su relación con "yollotl" (corazón, vitalidad, conocimiento), defendiendo el difrasismo "rostro, corazón". A partir de ejemplos del Vocabulario de Molina y textos antiguos, se explora cómo esta polisemia se extiende a otras lenguas mesoamericanas (maya-yucateco, chol, zapoteco, mixteco, otomí, entre otras), donde un mismo vocablo denota "cara" y "ojo", y a menudo "superficie" o "fruto".
