Abstract

The text analyzes the influence of the Nahuatl language on the frequent use and abuse of diminutives in Mexican Spanish. Through everyday and linguistic examples, it illustrates how the richness and variety of Nahuatl diminutives were adopted by the conquistadors and their descendants, shaping a characteristic and affectionate use in Mexican Spanish. Cases of diminutives applied to proper names, objects, adverbs, and colloquial expressions are highlighted, showing that this feature is not only a linguistic phenomenon but also a deep-rooted cultural reflection dating back to colonial times. The work demonstrates how bilingualism and cultural coexistence fostered this expressive richness

El texto analiza la influencia del idioma náhuatl en el abuso y uso recurrente del diminutivo en el español hablado en México. A través de ejemplos cotidianos y lingüísticos, se muestra cómo la riqueza y variedad de diminutivos en el náhuatl fueron asimiladas por los conquistadores y sus descendientes, configurando un uso característico y afectivo en el español mexicano. Se destacan casos de diminutivos aplicados a nombres propios, objetos, adverbios y expresiones coloquiales, demostrando que esta característica no sólo es un fenómeno lingüístico, sino un reflejo cultural arraigado desde la época colonial. El trabajo evidencia cómo el bilingüismo y la convivencia cultural favorecieron esta riqueza expresiva
