Nahuatl names for body parts

Abstract

This article examines Nahuatl names for body parts, focusing on the linguistic and cultural complexity of their translation. Based on historical texts, particularly Chapter XXVII of the Florentine Codex, it analyzes terms such as "tzotzolli," showing these words describe specific physical features like folds or areas with fatty tissue accumulation, differing from Western language concepts. The paper highlights challenges in translating terms that reflect particular cultural perceptions of the human body in Nahuatl. The study contributes to understanding anatomy from a Nahuatl historical and ethnographic perspective, as well as to discussions on translation and medical terminology in indigenous language

El artículo estudia los nombres náhuatl para partes del cuerpo, centrándose en la complejidad lingüística y cultural de su traducción. A partir de textos históricos, principalmente el capítulo XXVII del Códice Florentino, se analizan términos como "tzotzolli", mostrando que estas palabras describen características físicas específicas, como pliegues o zonas con acumulación de tejido graso, que difieren en su conceptualización de las lenguas occidentales. Se destacan las dificultades para traducir términos que reflejan percepciones culturales particulares del cuerpo humano en la lengua náhuatl. El trabajo contribuye al entendimiento de la anatomía desde una perspectiva histórica y etnográfica náhuatl, como también a los debates sobre traducción y terminología médica en lenguas indígenas
