Caminos del mundo náhuatl

Abstract

This study examines the qualities, functions, and social meanings of roads in the Nahuatl world based on ethnohistorical sources such as those gathered by Sahagún. Through the analysis of texts in the Nahuatl language and colonial references, it is shown that although the pre-Hispanic road infrastructure did not reach the quality of other American regions, roads played a fundamental role in daily life and the cultural dynamics of communities. It also discusses how Sahagún's perspective, influenced by his evangelizing work, conditioned the representation of these routes and their features. The work provides a comprehensive view of the importance of roads beyond their physical function, emphasizing their symbolic and sociocultural dimension

Este estudio examina las cualidades, funciones y significados sociales de los caminos en el mundo náhuatl, basándose en fuentes etnohistóricas como las recopiladas por Sahagún. A través del análisis de textos en lengua náhuatl y de referencias coloniales, se evidencia que, aunque la infraestructura vial prehispánica no alcanzó la calidad de otras regiones americanas, los caminos tenían un rol fundamental en la vida cotidiana y en la dinámica cultural de las comunidades. Asimismo, se discute cómo la perspectiva de Sahagún, influenciada por su labor evangelizadora, condicionó la representación de estas vías y sus características.
