Abstract

This review analyzes the editorial work by Frances Karttunen and James Lockhart on "The Art of Nahuatl Speech. The Bancroft Dialogues," a critical edition presenting a unique 16th-century document containing Nahuatl dialogues from the Texcoco upper class. The study covers linguistic, cultural, and social aspects of Nahuatl, highlighting formulas of courtesy, pragmatic use, and communicative competence in different contexts.
