Abstract

This article explores the political and social organization of indigenous communities in the mountain region of Guerrero during the 16th and 17th centuries, highlighting how they maintained their local and regional power structures under Spanish rule. Through the analysis of historical sources such as the Matrícula de Tributos, the Suma de Visitas, and colonial documents, the study reveals the changes and continuities in indigenous authorities, their privileges, state protection, and the evolution of their territories and political categories during the colonial period

Este artículo examina la organización política y social de las comunidades indígenas en la región de la montaña de Guerrero durante los siglos XVI y XVII, destacando cómo mantuvieron sus estructuras de poder local y regional bajo el dominio español. A través del análisis de fuentes históricas como la Matrícula de Tributos, la Suma de Visitas y documentos coloniales, se evidencian los cambios y continuidades en las autoridades indígenas, sus privilegios y la protección estatal, así como la evolución de sus territorios y categorías políticas durante la etapa colonial
