Sahagún"s Manual del Christiano: History and Identification

Abstract

The article "History and Identification of Sahagún's Manual del Christiano" discusses the historical trajectory, identification, and context of the manuscript titled Manual del Christiano, attributed to Fray Bernardino de Sahagún. It analyzes the circumstances under which the text was written and preserved, along with the unique Nahuatl orthography used by Sahagún. Furthermore, it explores the relationships between the Manual and other religious works by Sahagún, highlighting its pastoral style and interaction with indigenous communities of New Spain. Although fragmentary, the manuscript is a valuable piece for understanding evangelization and religious expression in 16th-century colonial Mexico

El artículo "History and Identification of Sahagún's Manual del Christiano" aborda la trayectoria histórica, la identificación y el contexto del manuscrito titulado Manual del Christiano, atribuido a Fray Bernardino de Sahagún. Analiza las circunstancias en que el texto fue escrito y conservado, junto con las características únicas de la ortografía nahuatl utilizada por Sahagún. Además, se discuten las relaciones entre el Manual y otras obras religiosas de Sahagún, destacando su estilo pastoral y la interacción con las comunidades indígenas novohispanas.
