This article examines the history and evolution of playing cards in New Spain during the 16th century, emphasizing the iconographic blend that combines European elements with American symbols. It discusses the local manufacture of decks under royal prohibitions, the cultural incorporation of indigenous people and conquistadors in this entertainment, and the social and magical role that cards had during the colonial period

Este artículo analiza la historia y evolución del juego de naipes en la Nueva España durante el siglo XVI, enfatizando la mezcla iconográfica que combina elementos europeos con símbolos americanos. Se aborda la fabricación local de barajas bajo prohibiciones reales, la incorporación cultural de indígenas y conquistadores a este entretenimiento y el papel social y mágico que tuvieron las cartas en la época colonial
