Abstract

This paper examines the influence of Jesuit Father Horacio Carochi and his foundational work, the Arte de la lengua mexicana (1645), on the study of Nahuatl in 17th century Mexico. It highlights how Carochi’s meticulous grammar set a milestone in colonial linguistic research and how it has inspired subsequent linguistic studies, facilitating a deep understanding of Classical Nahuatl and its translation. Furthermore, the paper explores the connections between the original Spanish texts and Nahuatl translations, as well as the collaboration between Spaniards and Nahuas within the academic sphere of the time.

Este trabajo analiza la influencia del padre jesuita Horacio Carochi y su obra fundamental, el Arte de la lengua mexicana (1645), en el estudio del náhuatl durante el siglo XVII en México. Se destaca cómo la meticulosa gramática de Carochi marcó un hito en la investigación colonial y cómo ha inspirado estudios lingüísticos posteriores, facilitando un entendimiento profundo del náhuatl clásico y su traducción. Además, se examinan las conexiones entre los textos originales en español y las traducciones nahuas, junto con la colaboración entre españoles y nahuas en el ámbito académico de la época
