El miedo a las “apariciones nocturnas” de Tezcatlipoca Cuitlapanton, cintanaton, centlapachton

Abstract

In Book v of the Historia general de las cosas de Nueva España [General History of the Things of New Spain] “ghosts” or “illusions” are described as nocturnal apparitions that provoked fear among the ancient Nahuas. According to this source, those who behaved “bravely” dared to confront them, while the “fearful” fled the scene. Using this document as a primary source, this work analyzes the meanings and uses of fear in relation to these “nighttime apparitions”, focusing specifically on the names, forms, and behaviors of the cuitlapanton. The hypothesis is that fear arose because the Nahuas interpreted the apparitions as tetzahuitl, since Tezcatlipoca revealed beneficial or harmful destinies through his nanahualtin. Therefore, this article examines what ideas about this “nighttime apparition” are presented in both the Nahuatl and Spanish texts, and what meanings are attributed to it within Indigenous thought. It not only discusses the validity of identifying cuitlapanton as another tetzahuitl, but also explores fear as a historical-cultural phenomenon embedded in the social relations of the ancient Nahuas

En el libro v de la Historia general de las cosas de Nueva España se describen “fantasmas” o “ilusiones” que aparecían por las noches y habrían supuesto causa de miedo para los antiguos nahuas. Según esta fuente, aquéllos con un comportamiento “valiente” se atrevían a confrontarlos, mientras que los “miedosos” salían huyendo. Con este documento como fuente principal, en este trabajo se analizarán los significados y usos del miedo a estas “apariciones nocturnas” y, en específico, los nombres, las formas y los comportamientos de la cuitlapan-ton. La hipótesis es que el miedo era causado porque los nahuas interpretaron las aparicio-nes como un tetzahuitl, pues Tezcatlipoca anunciaba el destino benéfico o perjudicial por medio de sus nanahualtin. Por esta razón, se examina qué ideas sobre esta “aparición nocturna” ofrece el texto en náhuatl y español, y qué significados se le atribuyen según el pensamiento indígena. No sólo se discute la validez de considerarla otro tetzahuitl, sino también la idea del miedo como un fenómeno histórico-cultural inmerso en las relaciones sociales de los nahuas
