Abstract

The Spaniards relied on the caciques to govern New Spain. The monarchy defended their author-ity, while reducing their prerogatives. To defend their power, which they felt was under threat, the caciques wrote numerous letters to the king, seeking recognition of their privileges and authority. We will be looking here at the way they addressed the sovereign and the writing devices they used to advance their cause, which reflect the way they saw themselves in the new colonial society

Los españoles se apoyaron en los caciques para gobernar Nueva España. La monarquía defendía su autoridad, al tiempo que reducía sus prerrogativas. Para defender su poder, que sentían amenazado, los caciques escribieron numerosas cartas al rey para solicitar el reconocimiento de sus privilegios y autoridad.
