"The history of banking in Mexico has gained increasing relevance, not only because of its ties to the political and economic elite—as was the case at the beginning of the 20th century—but also due to its impact on the everyday life of society. Understanding how the banking system functions and evolves is essential to analyzing its implications for the country’s economic trajectory In this lecture, historian Leonor Ludlow, a specialist in the history of credit and banking in Mexico, outlines the major moments in the development of the national banking system. Her overview begins in 1897, with the enactment of the first Law on Credit Institutions, and continues through to the emergence of multiple banking and the entry of international financial institutions The lecture was recorded in June 2014 and is part of the series The Historian in the Face of History 2014.
