Abstract

"The author discusses the edition of the book El desengaño del hombre by Santiago Felipe Puglia, a work published in Philadelphia in 1794 that questions the legitimacy of monarchy by arguing that it is an unnatural system. It violates both divine and human laws and undermines liberty, which is an inalienable and non-renounceable right of man. In the lecture delivered on May 21, 2014, as part of the series The Historian in the Face of History, organized by the Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas, the speaker presents an in-depth investigation into this work that “declares war on the tyranny of Spain and the Inquisition,” as well as the many challenges Santiago Felipe Puglia faced in getting the text published"
